Power Outage in the Building
Posted on Nov 13th, 2015
About 9:00 PM on Friday, November 13, the Landings suffered a power outage that affected much (but not all) of the building. Several owners contacted Seattle City Light and the Property Manager.
Power was restored about 11:50 PM that evening. City Light said the outage was caused by a lightning strike on the main power line along 40th Street. Make sure you reset your clocks.
Several owners reported a loud explosion around 9:00 PM. The owner of 401 (in the northwest corner of the building) saw a bright flash at the time of the explosion.
During the outage, some of the building units had power, others had none. The following common areas were affected:
- The elevator did not work.
- The P-1 (lower) parking area had lights, but the garage gate did not open.
- The P-2 (upper) parking area had no lights, but the garage gate worked.
- The 3rd- and 4th-floor hallways had no lights, though the emergency lights came on.
- All exterior lights were out.
- The intercom box by the front door worked.
Oddly, certain units had no power, but their microwave oven worked or the lights in one room worked. Other units had power, but the garbage disposal did not work.
Cordless phones could not receive calls when the power was out. Old-fashioned corded phones (like a princess phone) continued to receive calls.
Some neighbors got together at the beginning of the outage to investigate the problem and to offer help for each other. Our community did a great job handling the outage.
